Behind the times...

So Halloween was great. Managed to finish things enough to put them in front of the father-in-law's house and they got some good compliments. Lorelei was incredibly cute as a pirate, she seemed to enjoy the whole thing. She was called the cutest one all night long. Her wagon was decked out in foamboard pirate ships and we had a Disney pirate CD playing, so she had theme music too. Amanda and I both dressed up too, so it looked like she had her own pirate crew.

Thanksgiving went well too. Went to the in-laws, but because of stupid family stuff and people having to work, it was actually quite small. Smoked up two turkeys and they came out awesome. Turkey, by itself, is pretty good. Not something I seek out, but not bad. Smoked turkey? Awesome. I have to move away from the bird so I don't continue to pick at the carcass.

And the other news? We're having another little girl. We found out Wednesday afternoon. I really wanted a little boy, and I can't help but feel kind of disappointed. And I feel bad about that. Because our little baby girl will be loved and wanted and taken care of just as much as Lorelei is.

Oh yeah, I also was elected to be Anarch Coordinator for OWBN in 2010. I've already started working on it and have a team together and the whole thing. So I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do this year to help build the genre.

Happy TLAPD!

I find it terribly appropriate, and awesome, that on International Talk Like A Pirate Day, today's Backyardigans episode is one of their two pirate episodes.

I also am quite the proud daddy, being that when asked what noise a pirate makes, she'll make a quiet "arr!"

So avast me hearties! Being taught the next generation is the glory of pirattitude!

The Big News

So the big news that I've been sitting on for a few weeks now...

Amanda is pregnant! We've got another bun in the oven and our little "Peanut" is due sometime in April. It's gonna be an adventure with two!

Catching Up

Okay. So despite having extra time this summer, I managed to not post a single time after the ever-so-brief Star Trek review. Don't know how that happened, but let me try to catch up.

Summer was really pretty great. For one thing, as an educator, I get summers off too. Even with teaching summer school, I still had three day weekends and was done by 1pm. Not too shabby I'd say.

This was a great summer to be Lorelei's daddy. She's made so much progress, it's amazing. She's a little mimic; show her something once, then she learns it and does it. For example, last week, we went raspberry picking up in Oak Glen, also known to us as "the apple ranch." I showed her how to pick a bright red raspberry once; after that, she followed her mommy down the rows and when a bright red on caught her eye, she picked it and popped it into her mouth. Or right now, she's attempting to put sunscreen on herself after I showed it to her last week when were getting ready to go to the beach. She's still not really talking yet, but she understands a lot, nods yes or no and can say some single words. We also took her to swim lessons where she was the, of course, star of the class. Both instructors we had were impressed with how adept and natural she was in the water.

We somehow managed to see lots of movies this summer also. Star Trek, Harry Potter 6, Funny People, District 9, (500) Days of Summer, Julie & Julia, Public Enemies, Up and I think that's it. That's pretty darn good for us, especially with a toddler. But both sets of grandparents were pretty eager to spend time with Daddy's Little Coppertop, they missed the daily babysitting while we were working. None of those movies were clunkers, but only a few were really great. I'd say Star Trek, District 9 and (500) Days of Summer were the best of the bunch and were all pretty radically different from each other.

We managed two vacations this summer also. Three days a piece. The first one was with Lorelei down to San Diego to take her to Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. Wow did she love Sea World. She loved bouncing on the hotel bed too, but she really enjoyed the shows and the displays of all the fishies and whatnot. Utterly fascinated her. Not so much the Zoo; she was still tired from Sea World the day before, but she still enjoyed seeing the different critters.

The second vacation was for Amanda and I's anniversary. We went up to Monterey Bay for another three days. Hit the Wine Makers' Celebration and had *way* too much to drink. Did the Ghost Trolley tour that night and it was okay. It was interesting to get a taste for just how much history is there. The next day was mellow; we did the 17 Mile Drive and had lunch in Carmel. Out anniverary dinner was that night at the Sardine Factory and wow. Incredible dinner. The next day we took our time getting home.

We had some great food on those trips. The Sardine Factory in Monterrey was fine dining at it's best. Hodad's in San Diego had the best hamburgers I've ever had in my life. And the seafood at the Blue Water Cafe in San Diego was incredible too. In some ways, that's kinda the joy of vacations for us anymore; we love hitting these little joints that make great food. Read about Hodad's on CNN and saw the Blue Water Cafe on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network.

That's kind of the Cliff's Notes version of the summer for me. There's more details to be shared in person, of course, but suffice it to say, it was a great summer. I think it was kind of special for the three of us.

Children's TV

So it's about 6:30 on a Saturday morning. I've been up since 6. That's when I normally get up on a workday. And the wife and I are going to the RenFaire today, so that's a long day normally. So what the hell happened?

Lorelei happened. She decided she wanted to be up and awake. So I sit here, having checked my email and whatnot, still a bit bleary eyed, listening to the Wonder Pets. Not a very good show, really. Okay, the diversity of animals and the message of teamwork isn't too bad. But Ming Ming, the duck, has a terrible lisp. WTF? Small children don't need a wrong example of how to speak properly, they have enough issues learning to speak as it is!

I think I may have to do capsule reviews of all the shows Lorelei likes to watch. Dora, Diego, Jack's Big Music Show, the Backyardigans, Max & Ruby. I admit perhaps she watches too much, but there are times, like right now, that I'm not awake enough to play with the little one. That and it's rare for her to actually watch more than five or ten minutes of show at a time.

I think I need coffee.

July 4th

An okay weekend.

Spent Indepedence Day with the in-laws. The best part of that was watching Lorelei in the small pool they have. She loves the water. Just loves it. She went in twice and loved it both times. She especially loves 'swimming', being pulled through the water. She just smiles and giggles and laughs.

Saturday went to Kevin's house and met his wife and kid. Carpooled to the game with him. Sunday messed around the house and went to my parent's house for dinner. Good steaks.

Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. Summer school is fairly uneventful. Haven't had a chance to see Wall-E yet, though that should happen this week. Just thought I should pop up.

Just the most beautiful baby!

These are from the third photosession we did with Lorelei. There are also family pictures, but you don't really want to see my ugly mug, do you? Let's just keep it to the pictures of the most beautiful and talented and intelligent baby in the whole wide world!

Welcome Lorelei Leigh Silva-Jameson

Okay, so my last post was about no baby yet. Turned out I may have jinxed myself, as just after midnight I was awoken by Amanda to tell me that her water broke.

So we check into the hospital at about 1 am Thursday morning. Amanda just wasn't having contractions and with her water broken, they really wanted to get labor started, so they put her on Pitocin around 3am. By about 7 am they gave her some pain medication, then around 11am they gave her an epidural. But the problem was she still wasn't dialated enough. It wasn't until somewhere around 8pm that she really started active labor.

Oh. My. God.

It was horrible to see her in such pain, even through the epidural. Not to mention I could see everything. Let me tell you, seeing childbirth changes your impressions of the female anatomy. I'll leave it at that.

But then, at 9:56pm Thursday night, January 17th, 2008, Lorelei Leigh Silva-Jameson was born. She was 7 pounds and 12 ounces and 20 and 1/4 inches long. And just beautiful.

Unfortunately, that morning when the pediatrician checked her out, she had become jaundiced and more than she was comfortable with. So under a sun lamp in an incubator she went. Early Saturday morning, they took her to the nursery to go under two sun lamps. It was heartrending. We couldn't hold her or even touch her, she had to be under the lamps to help get rid of the jaundice. She had to even stay for an extra night at the hospital, which was even worse.

But she's home. As of Tuesday, she had already gained two ounces (which is a really good sign for a newborn) and her jaundice scores were well down and the pediatrician gave her a clean bill of health.

She's quite active for a newborn and she opens her beautiful eyes so wide and she seems like she's really trying to see and understand everything. Being the proud papa, I think this is a good sign of her obviously high intelligence...

I'll have to write more about being a daddy later. It's an amazing experience and it's only beginning.

Still no baby...

Despite what the ticker is saying above, no, she hasn't arrived.

I'm starting to get the feeling when I talk to people that they aren't really sure I was telling the truth about having a baby soon. You know, the whole thing of "no, really, I'm telling the truth, it'll happen any second now!"

Like when you were in the second grade and told all your friends that Mickey Mouse was gonna come to your birthday party or something.

I know it's all me, all my perceptions, but still, it's a bit weird.

The apartment is as ready as it'll ever be, the car is loaded up with what we need so we don't have to waste time packing, my sub plans are written for the rest of the month, it's all ready. Now we're just waiting for Lorelei to make her grand entrance and she's being stubborn and refusing to show!

Her due date was last friday, the 11th. I know it's very common for first time mothers to go past their due date. And the ultrasound and fetal heart rate check on Monday showed everything was fine. I'm kinda worried that Amanda hasn't had hardly any contractions of any kind though. The longer this goes on, the more worried I get that she'll have to be induced or even deliver via cesearean. Neither of us really want that.

I'm starting to lose sleep over this (not like Amanda who gets up every hour to go to the bathroom) and I'm really feeling it in my back. Of course, Amanda can now barely walk, so she automatically trumps any complaint I have.

I'm just ready to be a daddy and I just want everything to go nice and smooth and the longer things go, the more time I have to worry...

My little baby girl

I swear in this picture my baby girl has gotten tired of the ultrasound and all the picture taking and is had enough. No more paparazzi!

And here is her profile. Beautiful girl.

It's a GIRL!!!

It's a baby girl on the way!

We just had the ultrasound this morning and it's pretty definitive that we have a little Lorelei...or Loralei (we haven't decided upon spelling just yet) coming in January.

Perhaps the most comforting thing was that everything appears totally normal. All 10 fingers and toes, the brain and spine are developing just fine, the heart is pumping away perfectly, the little kidney and bladder and functioning, the whole bit. Everything is just fine. I sighed a massive sigh of relief when we were told that.

I have to admit I was kinda hoping for a boy; I was using the male pronoun and was really looking forward to explaining the advantage of the designated hitter rule in the American League and how it's better for baseball. I suppose I still can, but now I'm gonna have to learn how to play Barby and pretty pretty princess too.

It's a girl!!!

Back To Work & Baby Annoyances

Well, it's back to work. I know my friends that have regular 9 to 5 jobs won't sympathize, but it is a bit tough. I have just enough time off between the end of summer school and beginning of the regular school year to get used to sleeping in. And then it's back to getting up at 5:30 in the morning. It takes a couple of weeks to really adjust back to that routine. In the meantime, it really sucks.

I'm also starting to get really antsy about finding out about my baby. We thought we would have the ultrasound scheduled for last week and we'd know if it's a boy or a girl by the start of school. But for some reason, they made the appointment for next Thursday! Another week and a half of waiting! To be honest, part of the issue for me is that I have to wait that long to see my baby again. I got to see him/her at Week 11 and see it move and everything. I've heard the heartbeat twice now. But I want to see the baby again! That part of me doesn't care what the gender is, but just to see the baby and see it move and all that is all that I want.

Names? If it's a boy, William Vance. If it's a girl, Lorelei. I'm not sure on the spelling though, and we don't have a middle name yet. It was Irene for a while, but that got dropped for some reason.

And go read Amanda's blog! It's still new, but comment and encourage her!
